Continuing on with the rewatch of Digimon Adventure for the Digimon subreddit in the leadup to the Digimon Adventure Reboot coming in April, here’s my Rewatch of Digimon Adventure Episode 17 review!
Opening thoughts
If my memory serves me correctly, this is the only ‘monster of the week’ episodes in the crest collection arc, while it’s not as exciting or meaningful to the plot as the other episodes in this arc, it does have some great bits.
“The Crest of Sincerity”
(“Cockatrimon, the Captain of Illusions!”)
Rewatch of Digimon Adventure Episode 17 Review
The children are walking through the desert and are all exhausted and hot. Mimi tries to cheer Tai up who is down on himself. Palmon wishes there was shade and wishes she could evolve into a huge cactus to give shade to everyone. They see a cactus but it’s a mirage. However, Gennai shows up and says that they will have to work together to achieve harmony and the crests will be dangerous in anybody elses’ hands. Gennai says Digimon have to be looked after right in order to evolve the correct way. The kids are all anxious that they’re not taking correct care of their partners.
A giant boat shows up – a cruise ship. A Numemon is on board and Mimi is understandably uncomfortable. Tai asks the Numeon if they can come on board, and then Mimi decides to flirt her way on board, which makes me uncomfortable. The children board the ship so they can freshen up. Mimi and Sora want to clean while the boys want to eat, they’re wondering if it’s real or not.
In the pool, Tai asks Joe what he thinks Gennai meant about care. A human ship captain is watching them, but he’s actually Cockatrimon who works for Etemon. Cockatrimon captures the boys and Koromon evolves to Agumon. Agumon and Gomamon fight, but are turned into stone. The same happens to the rest of the boy’s Digimon.
Sora and Mimi are in the showers and Cockatrimon attacks, they run wearing only towels, the girls reach their Digivices and Biyomon evolves and Birdramon fights Cockatrimon. Palmon evolves to Togemon and the two beat up Cockatrimon pretty severly. With Cockatrimon defeated, the Digimon who are turned to stone revert to normal. The Numemon flee.
The children disembark and resume walking through the desert. Cockatrimon and his ship begin chasing down the chosen, but the ship is stopped by a real giant cactus, which the children take shelter behind. It turns out, conveniently, that Mimi’s crest was inside the cactus. Mimi is terrified by this apparently, but says she’ll keep it so she can look after Palmon.
Tai finishes narrating the episode, completely randomly, and says that Mimi has the Crest of Sincerity. Which is the name of the episode, but also this is the first time a crest’s trait is mentioned. Not sure why Tai narrates episodes inconsistently.
Rating for my Rewatch of Digimon Adventure Episode 17
2/5
A pretty okay episode, as I said in my opening thoughts; it’s probably the only filler-ish ‘monster of the week’ episode in this arc as it doesn’t really advance the plot at all besides Mimi finding her crest.
It’s a brief and weirdly timed step away from Tai’s inner turmoil, which was relevant last episode and is relevant in the episodes to come.
However, we get to see Mimi and Sora be the heroes and rescue the boys, which is the episode’s saving grace.
Again, it’s weird that we randomly find out that the crests have attributes and that Mimi is the first one that gets named, also it’s weird how Tai narrates sometimes.
