ABCs of Nostalgic Digimon: U is For…

It’s been a while since my last post of the year, but it’s time to jump back into the swing of things with the last few nostalgic Digimon!

U is For…

While I’ve mentioned that Digimon Adventure 02 has problems both on the podcast and in blog posts, I actually really adore this season and it’s probably the most nostalgic season for me.

So naturally I had to have some 02 Digimon on this nostalgic Digimon list, so here’s Upamon!

While the list of Digimon that start with the letter ‘U’ is a fairly short list, Upamon was an easy pick.

I really love the In-Training forms of the main character’s Digimon in 02, they’re all so adorable and fit with their Rookie forms so naturally and look fairly plausible in terms of theme (as in, it doesn’t go venus fly trap evolves into a bird for some reason).

I always felt that the In-Training Digimon in Digimon Adventure 02 had more emotion and personality than any other season because we seemed to get more time with the In-Training forms in this season; the Adventure children only had their Digimon devolve after a big fight, the Tamers only had their In-Training Digimon shown in the finale, the Frontier children didn’t have Digimon (but many In-Training forms were shown), the chosen in Savers mainly had their In-Training Digimon shown in flashbacks, and Xros Wars and Appmon never actually had In-Training forms.

I really liked how in 02 the Digimon would devolve to their In-Training forms whenever they returned to the human world, it was more plot convenient this way to carry around a ball rather than a giant bird, but it allowed for so many cute scenes.

I was never actually a fan of Armadillomon or Upamon, but when I rewatched 02 for the podcast in Japanese a few years ago, I absolutely adored him; his attitude, his dumb grin, the fact he speaks in Nagoya-ben. Everything was just so likeable about him.

Armadillomon and Upamon (and the rest of his evolutions in general) are similar to Tentomon in the same way that the other 02 Digimon are similar to their human partner’s initial DigiMental attribute, but none of these Digimon are similar enough to feel boring or stale.

So who is the most nostalgic Digimon that starts with the letter ‘U’ in your opinion? Let us know in the comments!
