Following on from last episode’s review and, of course, our podcast discussion episode, it’s time to watch the 45th episode of Digimon Adventure: (2020)!
Opening thoughts
It’s a bit weird going into this episode when Taichi achieved WarGreymon 15 episodes ago and BlitGreymon 9 episodes ago, but that’s this season of Digimon for you, I guess.
Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 45 “Activate MetalGarurumon”
Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 45 Review
The chosen arrive at a car yard which is really rundown and see a Digimon called Machmon driving around a racing circuit. Gabumon says he wants to run, so Gabumon evolves to Garurumon to race Machmon. Machmon looks like Greymon jogressed with a car.
I adore how happy and cute Garurumon looks here. Huh, gGrurumon uses the words ‘aibou’ for partner, I swear usually it’s partner. Machmon agrees to race. The circuit is 2.5 kilometers and has extreme banked turns.
Machmon and Garurumon race, but suddenly Machmon’s personality changes and begins attacking Garurumon. Tailmon pupes up with lore – The Grand Prix is a no rules death race. Machmon then spins out and Garurumon catches him to save him, but Gabumon gets injured.
Gabumon wakes up, we find out that Machmon carried him and he apologises. He has all these trophies and Machmon says he hasn’t raced for a long time. Machmon explains that his old habbits take over. Gabumon wants to race again and explains how he can run because he has Yamato and Machmon may not have a partner, but when they run together, they’ll be one.
Yamato is concerned by what took over Machmon and says that they’ll find out probably in the 450 metre loop. Joe is commentating with Tentomon – because Koshiro is elsewhere.
Hikari, Sora, and Mimi are dressed as Lilimon cheerleaders, and I was about to be mad about the girls being cheerleaders and then Takeru is also dressed as a cheerleader. Evie and Quinn will like this.
Machmon thanks Garurumon and then warns him to not get near him because he doesn’t want to ruin the race again.
Joe is commentating, but Tentomon is also elsewhere now. I love how into it Joe is. Koshiro and Tentomon are flying over head and watching for changes in Machmon. Yamato tells Garurumon to go faster, and when he does, Machmon attacks and glows purple, Machmon tells them to dodge, and Koshiro advises that we’re going to have the plot of the second Tamers movie – Parasimon is taking over Machmon.
The backstory of Machmon is totally that he killed literally everyone in a race, right. Also isn’t this the first episode for a while that doesn’t involve vore?
Machmon let Parasimon in because he never wanted to lose his title, and then says how he and Parasimon are a worse version of Garurumon and Yamato and how he lost all his friends, but also how he doesn’t want Garurumon to be taken over by Parasimon.
Garurumon evolves to WereGarurumon. Koshiro finds where Parasimon is and WereGarurumon becomes Sagittarius mode. Yamato jumps and kicks where Pasarimon is and gets caught by it. Machmon tells them to just run. Yamato says that they’re friends so they won’t just leave him.
WereGarurumon evolves to MetalGarurumon in a pretty cool evolution sequence, they then defeat Parasimon and Machmon still can’t stop and is running towards a cliff and Machmon is apaprently fine with dying.
MetalGarurumon catches Machmon in his mouth, and the reverts to Gabumon and they reach the goal together.
This time we’re learning about MetalGarurumon – Gabumon narrates it this time and says how when Yamato pets his jaw it feels really good.

This is a really fun episode and Taichi barely exists in it, which is a nice change of things. I enjoy this episode quite a bit, even if it really did just feel like a few Digimon episodes/movies we’ve already seen before.
