Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 22 “The Unbeatable Blue Sagittarius”

Following on from last week’s review and, of course, our podcast discussion episode, it’s time to watch the 22nd episode of Digimon Adventure: (2020)!

Opening thoughts

Every week I’m a little less excited to watch Digimon, but this is the first time where I just really did not want to watch.

Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 22 Review

Taichi’s group are walking through Eldoradimon and Takeru uses his newly discovered Jesus powers to determine which way to walk. Also, apparently Eldoradimon is the bad guy’s castle and doesn’t seem to have any personality. Don’t know why I expected anything else, honestly.

Yamato’s first line of the episode is “Takeru?” Because of course it is. I don’t think he’s said anything else for three episodes.

Takeru explains that a voice told him that this is the right way and how the voice hasn’t stopped since train incident. Would have been nice to hear about that earlier, honestly.

A whole bunch of Chikurimon appear – which I think must be another new Digimon, which is nice – and start heading for Takeru. Gabumon protects him because he’s so excited to meet the Takeru that Yamato is always talking about. As in. The one time.

Meanwhile, back in the human world, Sora and Koshiro are apparently still waiting for Mimi and Joe. They watch their Digimon fight as well as watch a news broadcast about the tankers.

Tentomon and Biyomon evolve. It’s weirdly animated again where it is weirdly reminiscent of a popup story book.

Meanwhile, SkullKnightmon is hanging out with what appears to be Eyesmon and the Angemon egg. Cool. Taichi’s group show up and Takeru says the other word he knows ‘yamate’.

Apparently there’s a whole which is a well of miasma but the main thing to note is how I’m getting Evangelion vibes. No, not from the imagery in terms of atmosphere and themes, but from the slide show presentation where we just get static images and characters interacting but from a distance where we don’t need to animate their mouths.

Devimon shows up to give exposition again. I guess. But also he’s a silhouette so we don’t to animate his mouth. Devimon says the egg has been seeped in darkness.

Takeru charges at him, but Devimon is like “oh yes this sacrifice is also my plan I am evil kill the child so plot happens and this makes Angemon have angst.”

Agumon and Gabumon evolve because it’s not okay to kill children. Only to Adults though, so they’re not that serious.

Meanwhile, Mimi is stuck in traffic, sees a shortcut, and instructs her personal driver to take it, her driver compliments how well she knows the streets and says how Genchiro Sama did as well. Joe tries to get into an elevator but a large group of identical looking people get in the way, forcing him to take the stairs.

Greymon and Garurumon and losing and we have Greymon evolve in a ball to MetalGreymon, which has to be the first time in a while that we’ve skipped that animation. Same with Weregarurumon.

Skull Knightmon asks for some evolution power and Devimon is all like “oh yeah alright”. I am super into SkullKnightmon’s voice I hope that remains when he evolves. He does! Darkknightmon has the same voice. Big fan.

The characters are weirdly surprised about evolution occuring. “Hey no fair only we can do that!!!”

Takeru nearly gets squashed but WereGaurumon protects him. However Takeru immediately decides it’s a good idea to run into the bad guy again. Dark Knightmon says the word ‘Hope’ about twenty seven times which isn’t so much foreshadowing as it is just saying a word that’s relevant.

Takeru’s Digivice glows and so does the egg so we know something magical and stupid is going to happen .

Back to the human world, Joe and Mimi show up to where Sora and Koshiro are at the exact same time. Their Digimon are so happy to hear that they’ve arrived. Especially Palmon. They evolve to adult and fight. No idea why we’ve forgotten Perfect level exists though.

Meanwhile, Takeru is jumping across floating box to get the egg. Great. He’s about to lose grip on the egg but then Yamato shows up. We get our first Oniichan from Takeru.

Metal Greymon is struggling and apparently has forgotten how to mode change because the writers have either forgotten or don’t care. Maybe he needs to have a broken arm to do that. Yamato feels bad for dragging his brother into this.

Meanwhile Weregarurumon has been shot through the leg and Dark Knightmon is to blame.
Just….move? Oh also the shoulder. Metal Greymon and Taichi are also down.

Weregarurumon says Yamato and Takeru because that’s all any one can ever say. We get out second Oniichan from Yamato. Anyway, WereGaurumon gets wings so I guess the writers have no idea what a Sagittarius is.

Interestingly, the evolution occured because WereGaurumon remembered something that Takeru said about not giving up and how he won’t give up either. Yamato didn’t help the evolution at all which truly reaffirms that he is the worse character.

Weregarurumon rips his wings off to use them as knives or something. WereGaurumon Doc Oct.

The egg hatches and spreads the light of Jesus. Or something. And we get Poyomon!

Devimon shows up and calls The Holy Digimon his old friend and says to him to fall to darkness. Cool.

Koshiro introduces us to WereGaurumon in the Encyclopaedia and wonders if adding a vest would make it classy and more stylish. It’s Lilimon’s turn next time.

Rating for Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 22

4/5

Not as good as the previous episode because it’s more or less the same sort of thing, but it’s definitely an okay episode. No idea what the ‘Blue Sagittarius’ is though.

Guess they just thought that sounded cool.
