Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 20 "The Seventh One Awakens!"

Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 20 “The Seventh One Awakens!”

Following on from last week’s review and, of course, our podcast discussion episode, it’s time to watch the 20th episode of Digimon Adventure: (2020)!

Opening thoughts

While I’m slightly more optimistic now it looks like it’s not JUST the Taichi and Yamato show in this week’s episode, I’m still slightly anxious about the direction that the show is going in.

Hopefully we get some, dare I say it…plot?

Anyway, I wonder who carks it first – Leomon or Angemon.

Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 20 Review

The episode takes off straight from the last episode where, suddenly, something evil is passing over head – it’s Velgemon, who absorbs Takeru or something? Abducts him? Whatever.

Anyway, the group flee as Valvemon is destroyed by Velgemon. Leomon says that Velgmon is powerful and basically talks Devimon up by saying that even Velgemon is under his command.

MEGADRAMON SHOWS UP TO NUKE THE KIDS! I love Megadramon so much! I’m so glad he’s here. I hope we see Gigadramon too. Leomon says that he’s going to fight Megadramon while Taichi and Yamato run after Velgmon. Yamato evolves Garurumon to WereGarurumon, but he does so just by saying “Takeru”, which is apparently all he can muster right now. Greymon also evolves. I do not have high hopes for this episode as the episode is six minutes in and we have two individual full-size evolution sequences.

Nevermind, hopes restored as we see Koshiro in the human world! He’s trying to connect to his Digivice. Sora apparently got told off last night by her mother and we get a frame of her on her knees with her very traditional Mother. Koshiro says that it was three whole days they were gone. FINALLY. SOME ACTUAL REALISTIC PARENTING! “OH MY CHILD WAS MISSING THREE DAYS I SHOULD HAVE A STERN WORD TO THEM”. Sora asks how Koshiro was and he looks concerned. Sora gets a text from Mimi and Joe who say they’re running late.

Koshiro connects to Tentomon and they are so happy! Koshiro runs off when some passerbys pay attention to his screen. Piyomon, Palmon and Gomamon are also in on this zoom call. Apparently all the Digimon are in the Network – which is where Taichi was in the first episode. The Digimon are tasked with working out what’s going on, and then we see an evil squid looking thing.

Ugh, back to Taichi and Yamato, who are fighting Velgemon. WereGarurumon riding MetalGreymon’s Giga Destroyer almost makes up for the fact we don’t get to continue on with what’s going on with the rest of the cast. Yamato and Taichi are trying to fight with some tactics and timings at least but this plan involves having Yamato leap at the Takeru-ball to rescue him, which seems very dangerous, but he’s a bit to sort of break through. WereGarurumon asks to take over but Yamato is stupid.

Takeru wakes up sort of to Yamato calling out to him, which is meant to be cool and meaningful but just feels really stupid and it was much cooler when it was Beelzemon doing the same thing to get Juri out of the D Reaper in Digimon Tamers. Yamato’s and Takeru’s crests activate when they join hands and Yamato rescues Takeru. It would be cool to have Taichi have any recollection about having a sibling but..nah none of that today.

The characters forget that they’re in mid-battle but WereGarurumon is able to catch Takeru and Yamato, who are falling, and MetalGreymon is able to catch them..which makes WereGarurumon jumping for them seem kinda unusual. It looks like Velgemon has defeated Taichi and Yamato and Takeru looks determined and yells for Velgemon to stop it, which causes an angel to reveal himself and destroy Velgemon – it’s Angemon.

Yamato says that this must be the Holy Digimon as he is both holy and a Digimon. Angemon takes Takeru’s hand, which activates his Digivice. Interestingly, Angemon has battle damage in his metal plates and seems to have a red scar on his arm?

Leomon sees the light and MetalGreymon and WereGarurumon are given power from this light which gives them both magical shounen powers to defeat the bad guy. Angemon dies and turns into an egg. So hopefully this means no more Omegamon or Shounen Magic. Agumon says that Digimon are born as Digitamas and then are reborn as DigiTamas.

Because nobody thinks of grabbing the egg, SkullKnightmon steals it, and Devimon is, again, addressing nobody.

Koshiro introduces Kabuterimon to us in the Encyclopedia, he says his head it hard to ride on, but comfortable, and Kabuterimon teachers him jokes as they fly, but Koshiro doesn’t understand many of them. MetalGreymon is next, apparently, so I’m worried that we’re just jumping into Ultimate evolutions…

Rating for Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 20

3.5/5

Better, and finally we have a character’s guardian actually realise their kid was gone for like 3 whole days.

I can’t believe my favourite part of the episode is barely part of the plot or any of the story but is just so meaningful.

Overall, another kinda meh episode and I just want to see the rest of the kids again.

Also Leomon managed to survive another episode.
