Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 1

Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 1 “Tokyo: Digital Crisis!”

There’s a new Digimon Adventure series in town, and, in the similar style with the rewatch of Digimon Adventure, I thought I’d continue on with the new Digimon Adventure show in a similar style (don’t worry, still planning on releasing a podcast episode about this tomorrow!), so here’s my Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 1 review!

Also, here thar be spoilers for Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 1, so be warned, this is a full spoiler review. I plan on releasing a quick podcast episode shortly about my general spoiler-free feelings and to answer the general question “Hey May, you like Digimon, should I watch this?”, but for this post, be prepared to read some spoilers.

Opening thoughts

I’m cautiously optimistic about this show; despite the fact I didn’t really enjoy Tri and I enjoyed reading the novel of Kizuna even less, I really liked Appmon, so I’m hoping that, when Digimon is in a tv-show format and aimed at children, it’s actually enjoyable for me to watch.

Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 1 Review

We learn of cyber attacks are going on in Tokyo as Taichi, a ten year old boy, has chosen to watch the news on his quick break from packing. We learn that his Mother and Sister are on a train.

Taichi meets his upstairs neighbour Kouhshiro. Apparently there’s now something wrong with the train lines and Taichi is worried for his mum and sister. Something goes wrong with the train and Taichi loses contact with them.

Also, yup, Mimi’s family is now rich I guess – Koushiro’s tablet is ‘Tachikawa’ branded.

Taichi puts his goggles on and jumps the turn style in an absolutely fantastic moment which causes his crest to activate and transport him somewhere, leaving his phone behind.

Taichi is in an online world and floating through. Very cyber Sleuth. The background music is just so nice, it feels equally emotional and adventourous.

He sees an injured Koromon who looks to be dying. He floats towards it to help it. He catches the Koromon

Meanwhile we see shots of the other children; Sora is shopping, Joe is in class because of course he is, Mimi is trying on a dress, Takeru is looking out a window. Yamato is probably talking to a tree – I don’t know, we don’t see him.

Meanwhile, Koushiro has his crest activate on his tablet and Koromon evolves and Taichi gets his Digivice.

When Taichi sees Agumon, I’m wondering why Taichi is suddenly a little scared considering he literally embraced the pink ball.

Anyway, The green Digimon attacks and Agumon fights him. Koushiro is able to contact Taichi on his Digivice.

Taichi puts on his gloves so he can fight the green Digimon – which is great because now he has gloves on for a reason and not a fashion statement.

Koushiro says that Taichi is inside the network. Agumon says that he’s a Digimon and then Koushiro reveals that he has a Digivice now too and his tablet changed too. Koushiro is excited because he can help.

I’m a big fan of the fact that we get sprites of Agumon and Algomon on Koushiro’s computer. The virus Digimon (yes, that is Algomon from Digimon Savers) are attacking the train’s control systems.

The last Algomon evolves a few stages and becomes huge and one of the train’s speeds up and looks like it’ll crash. Agumon evolves to Greymon due to the determination and courage from Taichi. Except the evolution is terrifying.and he attacks mid Evolution now. Greymon defeats the Digimon just before the trains collide.

Koushiro says that there’s another cyber attack in the US and the US’ tactical and military networks are being targeted, which could mean that a nuke could be launched (thanks Diaboramon).

We see Yamato and Garurumon looking on, so, thanks for helping I guess? Did a tree tell you to just watch or did you just decide it would be fun to watch?

I worry because the ending animation focuses on Yamato far too much except for the fact we get a shot of some of the other children standing around weirdly like that original chosen shot from the original Digimon Adventure.
Episode 2 is called ‘WAR GAME’ and I am very excited.

Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 1

Rating for Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 1

4/5

A strong start and I’m excited to watch more – the first words after watching the episode were “but…I don’t want to wait another week….” – y’know, how one should feel after watching an episode of anything, especially the first episode.

I always felt that the original Digimon Adventure Episode 1 had a fairly slow and dull start where they had to introduce 7 children and 15 Digimon (the chosen Digimon’s In-Training and Child/Rookie forms and Kuwagamon), whereas, for Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 1, we were only introduced to four human characters (if you count Taichi’s Mum and Sister) and to just a handful of Digimon (Koromon, Agumon, Greymon, and Algomon), which gives the show more time to show us more about the world and the characters who do get introduced.

My only weird concerns have to do with the worry that it will just be the Taichi and Yamato show again.

I cried from the moment I downloaded the CrunchyRoll app onto my TV and, let me tell you, I don’t think I’m ready to stop crying yet, but I’ll collect my thoughts and I hope you’re looking forward for our podcast which will be live on the public feed in 24 hours or so!

Hi May Sp here i usef to listen to your podcast from the beginning can’t believe it’s that long haha.
I really liked the episode as a casual fan of the series that doesn’t nickpick on the details.
I thing the op and ending theme will be updated as the series goes along, right now Yamato is the first chosen child and extra loner maybe the divorce and separation from Takeru hit him harder in this continuity so its normal to have the focus in him.
Even in the original series we had all the characters shine through minus Hikari despite taichi and Yamato stealing the attention, so i wouldn’t worry too much i believe all the children will have some character arc especially if its a 50 episode series.
In the opening we see metal greymon ,war greymon even omegamon but i thought the evolution lines were different this time, thats my only disappointment so far. As for the pacing i believe we will have a slower episode down the road so Taichi can properly react to the talking monsters!!!
Anyway this comment is long enough but i wanted to say that i will be glad to listen to your podcast reviews for this season, so keep up the good work

Hi, May, Jason here. Personally I don’t really mind the focus on Tai and Matt because while they aren’t my favorites they’ve always been the most important of the original eight. I loved this episode though I do think it could have stood to slow down a bit. Two champions being introduced in the first episode is a bit much, even if Garurumon was only in the episode for a few seconds. Hopefully the rest of the show isn’t too fast paced though. Overall, I’m excited for where the rest of the show will take us.

What are your thoughts?
