Continuing on with the rewatch of Digimon Adventure for the Digimon subreddit in the leadup to the Digimon Adventure Reboot coming in April, here’s my Rewatch of Digimon Adventure Episode 4 review!
Opening thoughts
Finally, it takes off with our rewatch of Digimon Adventure Episode 4 where Biyomon gets firepower and the viewers get plot!

Rewatch of Digimon Adventure Episode 4 Review
The children see a huge gear fly over, which is the first time we see a black gear. Sora is annoyed by the fact everyone is making jokes as the children walk through a desert for the first time. Which is weird, because previously the only one who cared at all was Joe, but, suprise, this is an English dub invention of why she’s mad, but I’ll talk more about that at the end of the post.
The group finds a Yokomon Villiage. However, the nearby volcano erupts and their water supply dries up, the children make the connection between the black gear hitting the mountain and the sudden lack of water.
Meramon, who protects the mountain, is then seen running down the mountain in pain.
Biyomon is staying back as everyone evacuates to make sure the Yokomon are all safe, but Soramon sees Meramon approaching and races back to help her.
Biyomon starts fighting Meramon but her attacks don’t leave a scratch. Everyone tries to help, but nobody can do any damage, seeing her friends and Sora in danger, Biyomon is able to evolve to Birdramon.
The gear is destroyed and the children realise the gear made him crazy.
The children, once again, make the connection that was made at the end of the last episodes: Digimon evolve when their partners are in danger.
Rating for my Rewatch of Digimon Adventure Episode 4

I am grading it on the dub version seems unfair but it’s what I’m watching, otherwise it’s a 3.5 or 4.
When I covered this episode on the podcast and compared the English dub to the English sub, I was really off put by the fact that they removed the main point of the episode – Sora is actually annoyed that she’s paired up with an affectionate and loving Digimon and it’s really different to her own personality. She’s just grumpy in the dub because nobody is taking the situation seriously (we’re just ignoring Joe now).
There’s a line where Joe mentions how they’re always talking about food, but the dialogue doesn’t go anywhere and it’s not addressed that food powers Digimon and it’s what humans need to survive, so it’s just a weird line that goes nowhere because nobody listens to Joe apparently.
Otherwise, I actually love the inserted jokes the dub makes, but the dumbing down of Mimi is kind of painful, but, for memory, it gets better.
