Following on from last week’s review and, of course, our podcast discussion episode, it’s time to watch the 7th episode of Digimon Adventure: (2020)!
Opening thoughts
So far, this show has just been getting better and better each week, and I’m hoping that this week’s episode, Joe’s introduction, is no different!
Joe is a really realistic and likeable character, so I’m excited to see how his character is portrayed in the new series.

Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 7 Review
The episode starts and Palmon has made Mimi and everyone else snacks and tea, Mimi has a little mug. Sora points out that they shouldn’t be doing this when there is plot to have and Mimi says that her grandfather always said that you shouldn’t rush and those that rush get less money.
The group reaches the sea, and then Sora, Agumon, and Tai take off on Birdramon to explore while Mimi stays chilling on the beach. Taichi points out a whirlpool, which then proceeds to attack them. Sora falls to her death and Birdramon is brought down into the ocean. Piyomon is unconscious and a Gesomon appears.
Thankfully Gomamon is here to rescue them. The group returns to the beach and Mimi and Palmon approach them. Gomamon says that that Digimon was Gesomon and he attacks whenever anybody tries to cross it. He introduces himself as Gomamon and he’s so cute. He knows that they’re the Chosen Children and says he has a partner human too. Gomamon looks a little chonkier this season.
When Sora says that it must be another child to join them, Gomamon says that it was meant to be that way.
Meanwhile, we see Hikari and Taichi’s mother watching a news broadcast, they then use power. Koshiro is watching the same broadcast.
We get to see what Joe’s doing; he’s studying for his Middle School entrance exam, because of course he is. He realises there are other humans and is disappointed that they aren’t adults, and says how he wants to get home.
The group explains to Joe that they have to see the Holy Digimon. Taichi realises he’s their Senpai, and then Joe says how he doesn’t have the time to save the world and he gets mad that he has to do this and how he has all this stress because he comes from a long lines of doctors and doesn’t have a choice as his rivals will get ahead of him, he breaks the little hut he was studying in.
Joe says to Gomamon that they can’t be partners, Joe says what if they struggle and is there any guarantee they can get home. He says he has to study and Gomamon can go with them. Joe thinks that there is nothing he could do if he went with them so he has to study.
Taichi is coming up with a plan to lure Gesomon out and says that Piyomon should stay and recover on the beach. Gomamon says he can be the bait. Gomamon says that Joe has too much going on and he’s struggling so he can’t join them, but he is sure one day Joe will become an incredible human, so he will have to do his best on Joe’s behalf. Joe is watching the group from behind a boulder.
Gomamon is luring Gesomon as per the plan, Joe is watching from behind the boulder still. Gesomon attacks Gomamon and Joe runs to help Gomamon on the sea shore. Gesomon appears at the shore and Joe flees with Gomamon. Agumon evolves to Greymon in his stock animation. Palmon gets her magical girl quick animation which is surprising that we get another animation for a Digimon!
Gomamon says how he was waiting for Joe for a long time, Greymon and Togemon fight Gesomon and Togemon is pulled under water, and Greymon is grabbed by a tentacle.
Meanwhile Gomamon says how happy he was when he first met Joe as he was waiting to see what type of person he was.
We get a flashback which shows Gomamon looking after Joe and Joe asks him if he was disappointed to be partnered with a human like him and Gomamon says he wasn’t at all disappointed. Gomamon says that they have to fight together and it’ll be alright.
Joe says he wouldn’t be able to even study and Joe says that he is Gomamon’s partner, not the other way around, which is really sweet. Gomamon evolves to Ikkakumon.
Ikkakumon, Greymon, and Togemon are able to defeat Gesomon!
After the battles, the group ride Ikakkumon to the other island, Joe tries to make a speech and then falls off Ikkakumon into the water.
Rating for Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 7
4/5
I love this new version of Joe – he seems to be succumbing to the pressure that has been placed on him, which is tragic and emotional, but it makes for a realistic character. He doesn’t seem as held together or stable as his 1999 counterpart and overall feels more realistic and more stressed out.
Anyway, looks like the real plot is starting next week, so I’m super excited for that!
