Following on from last week’s review and, of course, our podcast discussion episode, it’s time to watch the 57th episode of Digimon Adventure: (2020)!
Opening thoughts
I am honestly not looking forward to this episode because the last few Taichi focused episodes haven’t been my favourites.
But I’m open to be proven wrong.
Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 57 “Contact from the Catastrophe”

AnimeLab is only offering me the options of having this episode in 360p or 480p. I have no idea why, but I wish they wouldn’t.
Joe is at the hotsprings and Agumon and Taichi are hoping that Patamon is recovered – but they don’t ask about Tailmon, but it turns out Tailmon enjoys the onsen. Also, Joe has named the onsen the Kido onsen. I’m really happy to see Tailmon happy.
Meanwhile, Taichi is in a basket being carried by HoneyBeemon (Vmon with the Digimental of Knowledge), who are friends of Tentomon. Koshiro has found a lot of information, so he’ll be departing soon too, but he doesn’t really share much. Suddenly there’s a plot storm with an Algomon eye.
Taichi and Agumon awake in a terrifying area with lots of Algomon looking eyes, a bunch of the baby Algomon show up and Taichi remembers fighting them. It’s actually incredible seeing the flash back because the animation was so good in the flash backs and it’s just okay this episode.
The Algomon start saying hello and then they evolve to the adult level and say Taichi’s name and then one evolves onward to the mega form and then T-poses for dominance.
He refers to Taichi as a chosen child and introduces himself as Algomon. he’s also fairly extra looking. I love him. Algomon remembers the battles with him. Algomon says he was created to execute a mission and them meeting is the will of his creator. Please can the creator be Mimi’s grandfather.
Taichi gets kidnapped by the Algomon tentacles and then we get a bunch of Taichi clones. It would be a nice Easter Egg if we had one of them being Taichi’s original 99 Adventure designed and another one being V-Tamer design.
Agumon rescues one, but it explodes and Algomon reveals that the fakes explode and that this is a test and that Agumon has to rescue the real one and if he doesn’t find the right one soon, Taichi’s pulse will stop, which is fairly threatening.
All of the Taichi clones have different personalities, which should make it easy, Agumon tries rescuing another, but it’s a fake.
For some reason, I’m reminded of when Taichi had to open the gate to the Human World in 1999 Adventure and chose the Agumon card because it was his favourite.
Agumon decides to cut them all down, but keeps finding fakes. Why Agumon isn’t evolving so he’s faster is a complete mystery to me.
We get some flash backs and Agumon wonders what Taichi would do and then gets powered up my optimism and courage, he gets a burst mode kinda and just explodes all of the fake Taichis to reveal that the real one was in the back against a rock attached to an Algomon.
Agumon catches Taichi and Taichi’s crest glows. Agumon then evolves to Greymon in a big dumb animation sequence so he can fight the three Agumon adult levels. Then Greymon evolves to Metalgreymon and then to Alteros mode, which, by the way, I’m really glad we didn’t forget about.
MetalGreymon then evolves to WarGreymon. This would have been a much better WarGreymon debut but it feels kind of weird that we’re only getting Taichi achieving his crest power now after he’s already unlocked BlitzGreymon and WarGreymon.
Taichi demands answers from Algomon, and Algomon says he just wants to observe the partnership. Taichi asks who created him and Algomon says that the one who created him will make a move soon.
Algomon then I Dream of Genies them away and Taichi contacts Koshiro to inform him and Koshiro realises that everything started when the event happened at the start of the show. Which is fairly obvious. Yamato contacts Taichi too. Taichi’s arrow is still pointing someone. I guess whoever we’re focusing on next time? Not his crest though, which feels weird.
Algomon is seen consulting with a giant ball with an eye.
Today we’re learning about Wisemon, who appears in any book at any time. Koshiro wonders if he can appear in E-Books too. Which is a fantastic thought.
Next time the focus is egg.

This episode was okay, but felt weirdly placed since we already have Taichi achieving WarGreymon and BlitzGreymon. It was a nice episode for Agumon, which was nice, and it’s nice that Algomon is back and I’m excited to see where that’s going.
Also I’m not sure if Taichi actually got his crest – it appeared, but then we didn’t see it on his Digivice, just that he has an arrow to point in the direction of next episode, I would assume.
Don’t get me wrong, this episode was fine and, again, big fan of Agumon being the focus.
But something in this episode felt a little off? Not sure what. Maybe it’s the fact that Agumon felt kind of characterless?
EDIT: We’re about to do the podcast and I’ve worked it out; Agumon’s struggle is entirely too reminiscent of his struggle when Taichi was eaten and Agumon evolved into Mugendramon. It would have be nice if there were any references to this event in this episode to show how Agumon has grown, but no, none of that.
