Following on from last episode’s review and, of course, our podcast discussion episode, it’s time to finally watch the 4th episode of Digimon Adventure: (2020)!
Opening thoughts
After a two month hiatus, Digimon Adventure: 2020 is finally reairing, hopefully for the remainder of the season this time. We finally get to hopefully meet the rest of the cast, so I’m fairly excited to watch and review this episode.
Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 4 “Birdramon Soars”
Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 4 Review
Taichi has arrived and is wondering where Koshiro is, and he notices that Sora has joined him. Sora asks if Agumon is a dinosaur and is suprised he can speak when he replies that he’s a Digimon. Taichi’s Digivice lights up and Tachi notices some structure with DigiMoji on them.
The Digivice lights up once more, as does the DigiCode, suddenly, Taichi can read it – it’s addressing the chosen children. Taichi wonders why he can read it, his Digivice emits a huge beam of light which shows them the way to go.
Taichi says that the answers might be where it is pointing. Sora says that it can’t be helped if they need to go that way, so Taichi says they should go.
Taichi says that he didn’t know that there were so many different Digimon and I have no idea how he would have came to this conclusion.
We hear screaming in a bush – It’s Biyomon! Biyomon was being attacked by Snimon, surprisingly not Kuwagamon. Agumon says that Snimon probably thinks that they stole his food. I don’t like how Biyomon and Sora are holding each other while Taichi fights Snimon alone. I do, however, like the fact that Taichi is actually fighting himself.
The group comes to a cliff and they decide to jump off the cliff for some reason. Biyomon looks at Sora mid fall and apparently decides not to use her wings.Sora and Taichi then talk briefly on the beach until Koshiro calls Taichi, Koshiro is in the net place that Taichi was before and Taichi says that they’re in the Digital World with Sora.
Koshiro has a Digimon too now, it’s Tentomon! The subtitles say he’s using san, but he’s actually using han. Koshiro explains how the power outages are expanding in Tokyo.
Sora had just gone shopping for emergency supplies including raft making gear, binoculars, and her hat. While Taichi and Agumon are searcing for material to build a raft, Biyomon wakes up and embraces Sora again and introduces herself as Biyomon and says that she was waiting.
On the raft, Biyomon thanks Sora and says how warm her arms were and how she will fight too next time.
The raft encounters rapids, because of course it does. There are also ice cubes, which Agumon is able to break. I love how expressive the Digimon are in this season so far.
Agumon says that they’re not safe yet and a Coelamon attacks. I never realised how big they were! Agumon, again, assumes that the Digimon thinks that they’re food. Agumon is about to be eaten and Taichi jumps up with his Digivice, calling his name. Agumon evolves and we get an evolution sequence, which reminds me of 02’s armor evolutions because of the fact we see glimpses of other forms (Botamon, Koromon, and Agumon).
Snimon appears and picks Biyomon up in its mouth. Sora has apparently climbed onto Snimon. Sora falls and Biyomon falls too, they link hands, causing Biyomon to evolve to Birdramon! Sora has a DIgivice now and is on Birdramon’s leg as Birdramon fights Snimon. I love the insert song and I love how metal the evolution was!
After the fight, Agumon evolves as he said he’s relaxed now. Sora points out that there is something in front of the mountain, some sort of temple. Birdramon suggests they fly together.
Ogremon is watching the group while riding on a Coredramon. Edgy and cool. I love it!
Meanwhile, Tentomon IS FLYING KOSHIRO AROUND. However, Tentomon and Koshiro then get eaten by Whamon so, rest in peace them I guess.
Rating for Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 4
4/5
I was a little worried when the first three minutes of the episode was just a recap, but I was glad to find that the story that followed wasn’t in anyway lacking.
I’m a huge fan of Sora’s character and her relationship with Biyomon, as it seems to already be different from the relationship that the original Sora and Biyomon had.
The animation quality was most certainly a step down from the previous episodes, but the episode’s overall quality almost definitely made up for it.
In the end, I’d prefer subpar animation with a good story instead of the other way around!
I’m looking forward to future episodes as I really think that they’re possibly setting up some fascinating lore.
I’m also really looking forward to discussing this episode with Quinn and Stevie on the podcast tomorrow morning!
