Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 24 “The Final Stage, DoneDevimon”

Following on from last week’s review and, of course, our podcast discussion episode, it’s time to watch the 24th episode of Digimon Adventure: (2020)!

Opening thoughts

Here it is, the moment everyone has been waiting for: I am finally not looking forward to watching Digimon every week in the slightest.

Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 24 Review

I can’t believe they still haven’t updated the opening to include a bigger focus on the other main characters. By which I mean, Gabumon and Yamato….Yeah, my apologies, I am prepared to be salty again this week, but hey, at least the ‘last time on’ is quicker this week. Here’s hoping Taichi dies!

The kids retreat with the rising miasma, which is confusing, because previously miasma has caused Digimon to evolve. Anyway, Done Devimon looks pretty cool with weird miasma arms. Tokomon says that this is the evolution DEvimon was aiming for. Wow Done Devimon is just Venom – that movie that apparently nobody liked but me.

Anyway, protagonists nod at each other and run and Takeru says ‘Oniichan’ twice, so yeah, it’s Digimon Adventure: ! MetalGreymon evolves to Alteros mode because it’s just a thing they can do whenever now which makes it even weirder that MetalGreymon didn’t do it in the WereGarurumon episode.

Suddenly the characters are scared of miasma arms, Taichi thinks of Takeru and pushes Yamato off him, because, I guess, he doesn’t want a younger sibling to be without their older brother and because Taichi is an only child he wants to sacrifice himself. If the writers are forgetting about Hikari, I will too.

Back to the characters I care about, who are struggling against Algomon babies, Koshiro discovers that two tankers have collided. Apparently there are lots of these accidents across the world.

Were Garurumon mode changes and gets knocked out by Done Devimon who actually is the best part of this episode and laughs maniacally. Gabumon deevolves and Takeru is crying and screaming Oniichan. Taichi runs after Yamato as does Takeru and Done Devimon, hopefully, will kill these children. Tokomon glows when Takeru is about it be hit and gives a protection ball or something.

Taichi is motivated and angry and screams ‘STOP’, because it works for Takeru when he does it. Tokomon’s magic ball stops and Taichi is angry, so I guess we’re getting a Takato-like dark evolution? Taichi thinks of Taichi and Yamato being in pain. Not his sister. Done Devimon EATS HIM.

MetalGreymon evolves to Mugendramon and Tokomon is sad because he will become just like Devimon. DONE DEVIMON WALKS BACKWARDS CACKLING AS MUGENDRAMON BITES AT HIM. The animators are so lazy they didn’t even bother colouring Mugendramon and just make him red. I’ve never been madder to see Mugendramon, one of my favourite Digimon.

Tokomon gets mad, crys, and opens his mouth. He asked Takeru to help him. Why do Tokomon’s teeth change size? Takeru has a vision, or astral projects, or does some Jesus power, and then Angemon shows up, skipping Patamon completely, and tells Mugendramon to not let anger consume his mind and calm down. Agumon’s face merging out of Mugenmdramon is actually horrifying. He remembers Taichi and bursts out of Mugendramon and Mugendramon bursts into light which hurts Mugendramon more than the giant dinosaur biting him. And we Get WarGreymon who destroys Done Devimon in one episodes and rescues Taichi.

Tokomon is Tokomon again, so I guess Angemon was just a ghost. Tokomon evolves to Patamon in a pretty cool evolution sequence where he stretches out and becomes orange. By the way, Agumon is Agumon and not Koromon or an egg, which feels weird. Agumon is hungry or something since his stomach is rumbling and then the earth starts shaking and the episode ends because that’s just how episodes go now.

We get introduced to Garudamon in the Encyclopedia where Koshiro wonders if Garudamon’s long hair gets in the way and how Tentomon was saying that he wants long hair too.

Rating for Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 24

3/5

It was better than last week but there was still just so much I did not like about this episode – the Taichi and Yamato show aspects and the fact that Taichi doesn’t think of Hikari at all and still has barely mentioned her feels odd considering we know she exists are my main disappointing points this week.

While I did appreciate that the stakes are higher when the lives of the children appears to be at risk, I feel like evolution, especially to ultimate, is not earned and, I can’t believe I’m saying this, I prefer the random, ham fisted in ‘prophecy’ in the original.

Also, while I do enjoy that the other children are focusing on how all this impacts the human world, I’m really hating how side-lined the majority of the cast is – if the episode was focusing on both equally, it would be fine, but it just feels weird that they’re struggling against weaker Digimon constantly.

Also, what’s with just not showing Mugendramon and WarGreymon with their full, normal colours and just have them being a gradient of one colour? Why does Agumon’s evolutions not revert to baby ever?
