Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 17 "The Battle in Tokyo Against Orochimon"

Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 17 “The Battle in Tokyo Against Orochimon”

Following on from last week’s review and, of course, our podcast discussion episode, it’s time to watch the 17th episode of Digimon Adventure: (2020)!

Opening thoughts

I’m still fairly amazed with how episode 16 panned out and how we’ve had a fairly high quality stream of episodes.

Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 17 Review

In the Digimon encylopedia, we get introduced to Birdramon – Koshiro also wonders if Sora sits on a cushion when riding her, which I guess he wouldn’t have known that they’ve been using some log for the passengers to sit on. Togemon is next time, so I’m bound to enjoy that.

Taichi wonders if Eyesmon has evolved, we see many Orochimon heads, who Koshiro finds is an Ultimate Digimon all all eight heads are one Digimon. Hey, because all of the Digimon are currently Ultimate level, does that mean we won’t get any evolutions this episode? Orochimon lets out an EMP with its roar, which Koshiro explains, we then see how the EMP is impacting the real Shibuya through Koshiro’s laptop.

The Digimon attack Orochimon’s attack, but MetalGreymon and Zudomon revert to child as they cannot beat the attack. Garudamon is taking them away but Yamato is hesitating, causing him and Taichi to almost get attacked, but they get saved by WereGaurumon. I am guessing he’s worried about Takeru. The other Digimon get attacked and Joe suddenly is caring about his exam results, which is on brand.

Meanwhile, Hikari and her mother are evacuating, the car’s GPS is acting up. Back to the children, we see that all of their Digimon have reverted and the two protagonists have been separated from the rest of the cast – this is either a good or a bad thing, depending on how the rest of the show proceeds from here.

Palmon is complaining that it is unfair that Orochimon has eight heads and the group feels fairly deflated. Koshiro is thinking about how this is all impacting the real world – wait so Eyemon actually did evolve to Orochimon? Koshiro is trying to come up with a plan and Sora wonders if Taichi is okay.

Taichi is unable to contact the other group on his Digivice and says it must be due to that EMP that Kohsiro mentioned. So, I’m glad and surprised that they’re actually coming up with reasons they can’t communicate. Taichi asks Yamato why he was hesitating and Yamato explains that all of this is impacting the real world, they can’t just waste time, he then mentions that that is where his brother is.

We get a shot of Takeru trying to contact his brother, he looks at a photograph of him and his brother. Hikari and her Mother are still int he car and Hikari sees Orochimon. The trains started working again so everyone is just straight up abandoning their cars in the middle of the road. While Hikari’s mother is retrieving the cat carrier from the car and Hikari gets separated.

Back to the children, the characters are thinking of everything they have been able to overcome so far and how they’ve grown. Gomamon and Biyomon are saying how they physically grow large and Palmon straight up wins by mentioning she’s the most beautiful…but Mimi destroys her by saying only when she’s Lilimon.

Tentomon says ‘what about me’, and Koshiro says he’s the coolest. Sora says that if they work together, they can get through this. How do all the characters have dirt on them (even the Digimon) EXCEPT for Mimi’s face? 100% she washed her face before sitting down.

Yamato wants to fight, but Taichi says that they’ll fight together. Back to Tokyo, the TV is fizzling and Takeru is concerned, I’m kinda disappointed he’s not already in the Digital World. We then see that Taichi, Agumon, and Yamato are riding Garurumon and Agumon evolves to Greymon without an evolution animation – just a quick real time flash and smoke as he bursts through the tunnel.

Garurumon then evolves with an animation sequence, but it feels a little shorter at the start. Greymon also evolves to MetalGreymon to fight Orochimon. Yamato and Taichi are riding Metalgreymon as the rest of the group appears. Orochimon blasts both MetalGreymon and MetalGreymon and hits them to the side, but during this time Tentomon, Biyomon, Palmon, and Gomamon have evolved to Ultimate to fight too. They’re all going to fight together with the new determination that they found.

We get Our War Game style shots of Yamato and Taichi on the displays in the Human World that Hikari and Takeru can see. Orochimon is destroyed and we find out only one head was real and the rest were just decoys.

After the battle, all the Digimon are tired from two fights, which makes sense. Tentomon is also hungry. Taichi mentions how dangerous that was, but they got through it. Suddenly, a ten minute count down appears both to them as well as to the Human World.

Rating for Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 17

4.5/5

Another fairly solid episode considering it was more or less just one big fight – there were great character moments and the fight scenes were nicely animated.

I was worried that the episode would become ‘the Taichi and Yamato show’ as soon as the cast was separated, but I was pleasantly surprised to see them actually struggle in the fight until the rest of the group showed up.

I’m glad that we’re getting explanations to why things are happening in the human world, but also explanations to things that are occurring directly to the cast – such as being unable to contact each other through their Digivices.

As a side note, I’m honestly surprised at how little filler we’ve actually had this season. Have we even had ANY filler episodes?

Oh, did I mention that after covering episode 16 on the podcast, I actually increased the rating to a 4.75? Well, that happened, so a 4.5 is a good score for this episode as, while I liked it, it wasn’t as wholesome as Mimi’s quest for a cheeseburger.

Also, again, low key disappointed that Takeru hasn’t been in the Digital World the entire time as we hypothesised on last week’s podcast…

Overall, a fairly exciting, well animated episode that didn’t ignore any characters – what a surprise for Digimon.
