Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 16 "The Jet-Black Shadow Invades Tokyo"

Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 16 “The Jet-Black Shadow Invades Tokyo”

Following on from last week’s review and, of course, our podcast discussion episode, it’s time to watch the 16th episode of Digimon Adventure: (2020)!

Opening thoughts

The last two episodes have been of a pretty not-bad quality, but could this season of Digimon peak too early?

Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 16 Review

Koishiro wonders if sitting on Garurumon is comfortable and if Yamato uses a cushion in this week’s encyclopedia – next time it’s Birdramon! Same opening but with the weird new sound affects as previous weeks – I wonder if it will update at all with new animation or even a song. I hope so!
Taichi’s group have found themselves back in Japan in the Human world.

They’re in Ginza. Their Digimon are completely amazed. Taichi notices that the power failure appears to be over and wonders if the disaster ended already. Koshiro says that they haven’t found the Holy Digimon yet.
Mimi is so happy to be home so she can shower, change, listen to music, go shopping and eat. Her enthusiasm for food is so lovely to see.

Taichi and Koshiro’s phone can’t connect to the network. So this is all fake right? Mimi invite sthem to go to Burger Jack, and Taichi says that they should go home first. The three kids and their three Digimon get train tickets.

On the subway, Koshiro wonders how they got home, Mimi wonders if they defeated a Digimon or if Sora’s team did it. When they arrive at Shibuya station, Mimi wants to introduce her family to Palmon. Tentomon wonders if it would be okay and Koshiro notices that nobody has noticed their Digimon. Mimi splits from the group and Taichi and Koshiro get back on the subway.

Taichi wonders if Yamato’s side is back too and Koshiro wonders if the disaster really ended as they haven’t done anything. Meanwhile, Mimi is reading a map to go home and mentions how the construction keeps changing the path, so she gets lost often, even as a local, and Palmon notices that it’s like a maze. Mimi and Palmon have been unable to leave the station and are appearing to be going in circles.

Mimi starts imagining Palmon being an avocado, but then sees a Burger Jack. The clerk at the restaurant is on a loop and glitches out. Meanwhile, Koshiro is mentioning how nobody is acting like there was just a disaster and Agumon mentions how they’re not outside yet – in fact, they’re still at Shibuya station. Taichi and Koshiro run into Mimi again.

Mimi asks an attendant for advice but he only says a line about not breaking any bills. A giant eye appears, which Agumon attacks. As Persona as Digimon usually gets, this is a pretty Persona episode.

Agumon evolves after some parts of the area begin to fade and distort out. Greymon then bursts a hole in the roof and they’re able to leave the station. Mimi says they’re able to return home. but suddenly everyone is horrifying and Taichi realises that this isn’t their world and they’re still in the Digital World.

We get a shot of the real Tokyo, Hikari and her mother are evacuating and she Hikari is very verycalm. OH THEY HAVE THE CAT. Taichi’s mother has left a note for him saying that they’re at the Grandparents. Mimi is shaking, but Palmon grabs her hand and says that, once everything is over, Mimi should treat her to the Avocado Cheeseburger in her real city. It’s a sweet moment, but the fact that Palmon makes is just…so much.

Mimi vows to eat that Avocado Cheeseburger with Palmon. Palmon and Tentomon evolve to defeat the Persona monster, and the three adult Adult Digimon fight. The Digimon, made of all the eyes, is called ‘Eyesmon’. Is this an entirely new Digimon?

Greymon evolves to MetalGreymon in his special animated sequence and Togemon and Kabuterimon evolve is shorter sequence ones, which I prefer, as I always mention. Eyesmon vanishes behind a building he summons before MetalGreymon attacks and launches lasers at MetalGreymon. The same thing happens to AtlurKabuterimon, and Lilimon gets an Aeroplane yeeted at her.

Eyesmon is an Adult level Digimon that can eat and spawn data – Mimi points out that Eyesmon copied and pasted Tokyo. Koishiro says that Eyesmon is causing the power failure. Eyesmon drops a building on the kids, but Garudamon and Sora show up and destroy the building. Zudomon shows up with Yamato and Joe riding him. Joe wonders if he’ll get in trouble destroying things. It’s a fairly cool moment.

All the Perfect level Digimon attack at once and Eyesmon builds a building shield, which the characters are able to break through with their combined attack and finally destroy Eyesmon. Koshiro’s internet connects and he learns that the real Tokyo is in its third night – it’s been 72 hours. Koshiro is now receiving the updates at real time, an Orochimon then shows up.

Side note: I love the new ending song more and more each week. When can this be released? I need it.

Rating for Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 16

4.5/5

Something I love about this series compared to the original is the fact that all characters are relevant and have their time to shine and the show doesn’t always become the ‘Taichi’ show when there is no other character to focus on.

I really wanted to give this a 5/5, but I just felt that some parts fell slightly flat and I’d only be giving it a 5/5 for Mimi, so, 4.5 it is.

Meaning, while I felt that Koshiro and Taichi seemed a little flat, Mimi was incredible relatable this entire episode too and I love that Palmon is supportive of her.

An overall enjoyable episode, but I really do wonder how Sora’s group found them…

Additional side note: I can’t believe Mimi’s leaf bag is still hanging in there.
