Opening thoughts
Oh, look here! Another Mimi episode! Will Mimi be rescued by the boys, or will she get her own time to shine?
Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 12 “Lilimon Blossoms”
Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 12 Review
We get introduced to Palmon in the analyser, apparently the flower changes depending on her mood. Piyomon is next week!
Palmon and Mimi have fallen down a trap, Mimi looks up from where she fell and calls out to her friends, Palmon tries to extend her vines to reach the top, but it is too high. At least she tried. Mimi wants to find a way out and looks so wonderfully determined.
Meanwhile the boys are just calling out to her. Koshiro is translating the words he took photos of before to see if he can find out about the ruins. There are robot Digimon in the ruins.
A Soundbirdmon wakes up Andromon, Mimi is looking around and finds piles of scrap metal – they’re all from discarded Digimon such as Hagurumon and Gaudromon, which is actually horrifying. Mimi feels bad for the robots, and clears the dust off one.
When Mimi turns around, she sees Andromon, who she immediately apologises to and then asks if he knows the way out. However, Andromon wants to kill her! Palmon saves Mimi and then evolves with her magical girl transformation again!
Togemon vows to protect Mimi, but is stunned by his punch and reverts to Palmon. Andromon is about to strike at Mimi, but Mimi is rescued by the Gaurdromon who she cleaned the front of earlier. He is a lot bigger. he is Gaurdomon No 2078.
Turns out Mimi just has the crest of being the nicest person and the best girl, because Gaurdromon remembers her kindness and saves Mimi and Palmon by dropping some machinery on Andromon. They are able to escape, but Mimi feels helpless because Palmon is in pain.
Meanwhile, Taichi and Agumon are climbing down the hole as Koshiro and Tentomon fly down.
Gaurdromon has brought Palmon and Mimi to some underground lake but it really reminds me of Princess Mononoke. Gaurdromon offers Mimi a flower and she thanks him. Mimi asks Gaurdromon if he knows the way out, which he does. However, Andromon is freede from the machinery and wants to eliminate Mimi.
Birdramon is flying the other group – Sora is concerned about Neamon’s group and Joe is airsick. Taichi and Koishiro, meanwhile, have made it down the hole, see a Soundbirdrmon and are surrounded by Haguramon who want to keep them away from Mimi having her own episode. Agumon evolves to Greymon in an animated sequence and fights them off, which seems unnecessary to evolve but whatever.
Gaudromon takes Mimi and Palmon to an elevator, but Andromon breaks through the door before it closes. Gaurdromon begins fighting Andromon again and tries to break off more machinery to crush and slow Andromon down again. Gaudromon is struck by Andromon’s attack and his eyes fizzle out.
Koshiro and Kabuterimon show up and Taichi and Greymon are far behind. Kabuterimon is fighting Andromon, which the original Kabuterimon was able to beat along with the group in his original season evolution episode, but this time is not as lucky and he reverts to Tentomon.
Greymon and Taichi show up to save the day. Greymon evolves with a stock footage animation to MetalGreymon. Which is only annoying because this is Mimi’s episode, so hopefully he dies immediately. Palmon asks Mimi to evolve, and she does in a quick flash.
Despite the fight, Andromon is still able to stand. Andromon attacks and Togemon saves the children by holding the machinery above her head, as does Metalgreymon, but Togemon looks cooler doing it.
Andromon is about to execute Mimi, but Gaurdromon grabs hold of his leg, causing Andromon to destroy him by stepping on him. Mimi says she won’t forgive Andromon and tears up and she says she’ll never forgive him, this activates Mimi’s crest and Togemon evolves to Lilimon.
Lilimon says that Mimi’s sorrow and anger made her evolve. I’m glad that MetalGreymon is only there to stop the others from being squished by the machinery. Lilimon shoots her flower canon and says that it’s Mimi’s pain. Her vines grow over Andromon and turn the ruins into a mossy area and the whole thing looks like a scene out of Castle in the Sky.
Lilimon looks concerned at Mimi, who bursts into tears. In the next scene, we see Mimi putting the flower on Gaurdromon and paying her respects. Once done, Mimi says that they have to press on.
Rating for Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 12
5/5
Mimi is the best girl now and forever. I was worried when Koshiro and Taichi showed up, but it turned out to primarily be just to stop the falling machinery from killing them and to basically, in wrestling terms, “job” to Andromon in order to “put him over” as a formidable foe. And it works!
Taichi and Koshiro were a good level of present in this episode – too little and it would have felt a little ‘off’, but too much and it would have taken away from Mimi’s time in the spotlight.
Mimi got her own time to shine and her own character moments – we see that she is a nice, caring girl, but can also be emotionally charged and strong willed.
We also got to see Mimi as somebody who will take the time to mourn fallen allies instead of pressing on, but once she is done mourning, she will return to the matter at hand.
I have given this episode a 5/5 because I can’t see many things I would change about the episode; the focus on Mimi was great, the fact that she was not really rescued by Taichi and Koshiro was honestly surprising, and getting to see Mimi’s emotions was incredible…and of course, this episode was incredibly beautiful in terms of the imagery used; Mimi and Palmon’s bright and floral colours against the dark and cold machinery and and stone of the ruins was a great contrast of themes and colours and further helped Mimi stand out as the super star golden child that she is and always will be.
