Xros Wars is a pretty alright season, it has a lot of great ideas that make it one of the most unique seasons of Digimon, unfortunately, for a season so unique, for the most part it tries to play it safe and ends up being a little ‘just okay’ at times. It gets a lot of slack, especially in it’s third season for being formulaic. However, I still love it for its new ideas and attempts to rewrite the Digimon anime formula.
I should point out that this season has the most amount of episodes as I’m combing each of the three parts. Also third part was never released in English.
Best
Episode 34 – “Hang on, Greymon! The Rise of Shoutmon DX” (“Don’t Die Greymon! Shoutmon DX is Born”) (Episode 4 of ‘The Evil Death Generals and the Seven Kingdoms’)
Episode 34 was a truly excellent episode and sets off the new arc/season pretty strongly.
We get a real death which is actually pretty heart breaking (especially with Cutemon’s reaction), a satisfying ending from the previous episode’s cliffhanger, and a happy feeling of teamwork.
This episode is actually equal parts entertaining, scary, and funny. It seems like it ticks every box and is the most memorable episode.
Even if it does do the Digimon thing of ‘hey look a prophecy that only just now became relevant!’
Honorable mentions to the ‘Gold Land’ mini-arc, the ‘Bright Land’ mini-arc, and the episodes that have Kiriha deciding he’s a piece of shit and explains why he feels that way instead of just rolling with it like in previous episodes.
Dullest
Episode 55 – “We, the Digimon Hunters!” (Episode 1 of “The Boy Hunters Who Leapt Through Time”)
Welcome to ‘new character learns the mechanics of a world we already know the mechanics of and he’s just the second coming of Daisuke!
It’s not too bad as Shoutmon is revealed to be the Digimon King!
Worst
This is hard! This is really hard! I enjoyed all episodes and the ones that were dull/mediocre were still fine. Even Part 3, which a lot of people don’t like, was fine.
So I’ll just go for an episode which follows the same theme as an episode of Digimon Adventure, Digimon Savers, and Appmon. It’s a theme and story I hate
Episode 61 – “The Okonomiyaki Panic! The Town Full of Pagumon” (Episode 7 of” The Boy Hunters Who Leapt Through Time”)
Yeah, I hated the episode in Adventure where Tokomon ran off on Takeru, the episode where Agumon and Masaru fight for little to no reason wasn’t my favourite, and the episode of Appmon where Gatchmon is jealous and runs away from home was a blemish on a near-perfect season.
So when Hunters did essentially the same plot as Digimon Adventure (as in, evil looking dude gets close to character and their partner Digimon is having none of it) it was not my favourite.
Especially because the jealousy doesn’t make sense in a season where the protagonists have multiple Digimon!
Next time I’ll be talking about my favourite season which will be a lot easier because it’s probably the season I’ve thought the most about. I also ranked each episode and I already know all of my answers.
