Following on from last week’s review and, of course, our podcast discussion episode, it’s time to watch the 59th episode of Digimon Adventure: (2020)!
Opening thoughts
If we don’t get any further backstory about Koshiro, his parents, and his adoption in this episode, I will be thoroughly confused, but it makes for a video rant idea.

Nanomon is looking at a monitor with lots of photos of Koshiro, and Nanomon is surrounded by Soundbirdmon, who are seemingly controlling him.
Meanwhile, Koshiro has arrived at the place where Tentomon became AtlurKabuterimon for the first time. Tentomon is fixing his bed hair, and then Agumon and Taichi show up. Nanomon then calls out for Koshiro and says he loves knowledge too, so he wants to challenge him.
Nanomon has a Whamon captive, it’s the one that Koshiro met in the network at the start of the show. There’s also a GranKuwagamon, so that’s definitely where Nanomon is right?, who will eat him. So this is another test by a Digimon. Nanomon has sent up a dungeon with traps and riddles to solve so he can find him.
Koshiro gets a riddle sent to his tablet. It’s weird that Taichi and Agumon are accompanying Koshiro on this test. Koshiro finds that the riddle is referring to the wind in the tunnel. Koshiro looks like he really enjoys the test.
Taichi and Agumon trying to go head first into everything is really annoying, but Taichi gets kidnapped, because they were meant to ride the geyser to proceed. Nanomon will turn Taichi into a Nanomon. Good, finally some character development.
The next riddle involves crossing a flame, which they are able to do so, it’s actually fake fire. This is fairly similar to the Prisoner of the Pyramid. They then have to dance for the next part, Koshiro realises that he has to jump in the right direction.
Nanomon reminds them of the time remaining and this causes Koshiro to make an impulsive decision, which is incorrect. Agumon gets kidnapped and Koshiro can’t find Tentomon, Nanomon releases a penalty, but Tentomon saves him – he was unconscious.
Koshiro feels helpless and says it’s all his fault, but Tentomon says that he believes in him and how he shouldn’t give up. Why is Tentomon the best drawn and animated character in this episode.
Tentomon fixes his bedhair again, and Koshiro wonders when his reflection will show who he is inside. Turns out that Koshiro’s crest is just the crest of believing in yourself. They jump in the water and Tentomon evolves under water.
Now they must fight GranKuwagamon and we get a really lazily animated evolution to AtlurKabuterimon which has him just in a purple orb that doesn’t move. Koshiro sees Whamon and remembers that the riddle references the past – PLEASE BE HIS BACKSTORY WITH HIS PARENTS.
Nope, it’s just where Nanomon is located – in Whamon. AtlurKabuterimon evolves to Hercules Kabuterimon and they use fake fires to get Nanomon to try to escape. Which is pretty clever but no reference to Koshiro’s parents still?
Nanomon and GranKuwagamon attempt to escape, but HerculesKabuterimon defeats GranKuwagamon and we learn that Nanomon is Garbamon’s friend and he was under the control of Soundbirdmon, which is great that they’re relevant again.
Taichi says how SoundBirdmon were Devimon’s minions. Koshiro gets his crest symbol on his Digivice and the episode ends.
We’re learning about HerculesKabuterimon in the encyclopaedia! Tentomon introduces himself and says he promises Kohsiro a safe ride. It’s Vikemon next time!

Starting to wonder why we had hints on something being up with Koshiro early on in the show (which, one would presume, would refer to him being adopted), if the show never wants to tell us anything about it or build on it at all. At this rate, I’m kind of worried it’ll be lumped into the last episode and be bundled in with quick motivational speeches from all the chosen in a similar way to how we had Apocalymon in the original Adventure.
At least this episode had a REASON for Taichi and Agumon to show up – to get kidnapped.
