Following on from last week’s review and, of course, our podcast discussion episode, it’s time to watch the 56th episode of Digimon Adventure: (2020)!
Opening thoughts
We’re finally up to date, so I’m actually writing this before I watch the episode like I did before I moved house!
I’m not expecting too much from this episode – while Yamato’s episodes are typically okay, the last chunk of episodes have been mediocre at best, but I hope the show can prove me wrong!
I also thought we’d be getting CresGarurumon earlier since it’s been 20 episodes since BlitzGreymon debuted – I wonder how far away Omegamon Alter S’ debut is…

Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 56 Review
Yamato and Gabumon are camping out and Yamato wonders where the arrow is leading. Meanwhile, Gabumon is having a dream about being CresGarurumon. Suddenly, they are attacked by Zanbamon, because it’s time for a Digimon World 2003 boss.
There’s also a Grizzmon watching, because Digimon World 2003. There’s also a Strabimon, who is Lobomon from Frontier’s child form. There’s also Hanumon. It’s, again, really great to see old, un loved mons show up in the show. Zanbamon kills Grizzmon and Hanumon, and Grizzmon says he leaves everything to Strabimon.
Garurumon attacks Zanbamon, but his attack goes straight through. He is, however, able to rescue Strabimon. Who is just surprisingly skinny. Zanbamon vanishes at daybreak.
Strabimon returns to his village with more Digimon World 2003 Digimon like Monmon and Kotemon. Mojyamon tells Yamato about Zanbamon, and Zanbamon relays this to Koshiro. Yamato decides to investigate. Gabumon is still thinking about his dream.
That evening, we find out that Mojyamon is planning on patrolling, but Yamato says he’ll do it and draw out Zanbamon with Garurumon’s speed. I don’t know why they’re not using MetalGarurumon for this like straight away.
Garurumon evolves to WereGarurumon Alteros Mode and fights Zanbamon – we don;t get an evolution animation for this because I guess we’re saving that up for when Taichi and Agumon inevitably show up!
OH I WAS LITERALLY JOKING METALGREYMON AND TAICHI SHOW UP. I HAD A FEELING HE’D APPEAR. JUST NOT AFTER I MADE A JOKE ABOUT IT. But at least we don’t see the animation sequence.
The next morning, Strabimon find the group essentially passed out. They fought until the sun came up, we get shots of the battle and we see that WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon actually fought too, so it’s nice that we’re remembering they exist.
Koshiro reports to the group about how there was a war in that area which Zanbamon fought in and so did the Digimon Gabumon has been dreaming about. So that’s a fairly cool concept. Zanbamon is actually a curse.
Yamato and Gabumon both want more information about the battle and where Zanbamon was sealed, so Strabimon takes them there. They find the sword fighter’s sword. Garurumon takes it in his mouth because of his dream.
That night, Garurumon evolves to Garurumon in his evolution sequence and Alteros Mode fights with the legendary sword, but it shatters basically immediately. Yamato removes it from the ground, with his 10 year old strength and WereGarurumon holds it too to push Zanbamon back.
The sword glows and Yamato gets his crest glowing above his Digivice. WereGarurumon mega evolves to Cres Garurumon and fights Zanbamon and is able to anime slice him.
Strabimon wants to wield the sword now. Taichi and AGumon want their Digivice to glow too.
In the encyclopedia, we’re learning about CresGarurumon! Koshiro said that when he thought it was cool to have a sword, Tentomon started pretending he had one.

Another just okay episode, nothing wrong with it, but nothing that really strikes me as incredible. CresGarurumon wasn’t really a surprise to me since I knew he was coming since the release of the Digivice: toy, not to mention when BlitzGreymon appeared, which also hinted at CresGarurumon showing up.
Once again, I had no idea why Taichi showed up at all as he contributed absolutely nothing to this episode.
