Following on from last episode’s review and, of course, our podcast discussion episode, it’s time to watch the 31st episode of Digimon Adventure: (2020)!
Opening thoughts
After a week off for the New Year’s break, hopefully 2021 has some quality episodes in store for us starting from Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 31!
Due to the appearance of Milleniumon this week, we touched on the Wonderswan games in anticipation in our podcast last week. So it’ll be interesting to see how much this series draws from the existing lore in the franchise or if it completely abandons it and Milleniumon exists on his own with no reason for doing so.
Yeah, I’m worried and expecting it to be the latter.
Side note; I am (rather surprisingly) looking forward to this episode!

Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 31 Review
Okay so AnimeLab has a problem with their subtitles this week, so I’m watching with half of the subtitles on visible as only three words fit on the screen due to the fact that the subtitles are massive. So this will be a weird one to watch. No they cannot be turned off or disabled – they appear to be embedded in the video.
Biyomon and Sora ask Taichi how they did it and Taichi says that they were frantic. Suddenly, Lopmon is possessed by some ancient memories? During this, Patamon’s ear pricks up and, I’m fairly certain that SKULLKNIGHTMON REACTS TOO??? I AM EXCITED. Lopmon says that Lopmon is her name in this life. Lopmon is back from the ancient war. WarGreymon reverts to Agumon and is hungry. Woodmon gives him food.
There’s some black lightning again which is a sign of new darkness. Taichi remembers the Digimon with the shining wings in the temple and Sora remembers of the war. There are a bunch of Bakemon nearby that get powered up by the lightning, then Lopmon parts some trees.
The Bakemon attack and seem to have some tree burning power, which is kinda creepy. Lopmon tells the chosen children to follow and then gives them memories from her consciousness. So she’s giving them what Homeostasis gave to the children in the 99 series, basically. Which is pretty cool as I’ve been dying to see some plot like what was set up in the first chunk of episodes.
We see the ancient war, Lopmon morphs into Cherubimon, we then see Zeed Milleniumon, which surprised me as we didn’t see him in the colon Digivice. We see Angemon and Angewomon, who, apparently is being covered in light as we haven’t actually seen her design in the show.
We then see Angemon evolve to Seraphimon and Angewomon evolve to Ofanimon. The Eight Mega forms of the children’s Digimon defeat Milleniumon but the whole Continent was destroyed. Lopmon says about how the flow of data is the source of power in Eternal Continent and the power that’s being gathered is being used by the sleeping Milleniumon. I’d like to point out how many times Lopmon has said ‘Hikari’ like twenty times and Taichi is just stuck wondering who the other Digimon is.
The Bakemon have caught up and Agumon evolves to Greymon in a nice quick flash, as does Piyomon to Birdramon. The group come across a small village and MetalFantomon shows up, who I love but apparently evolves from Bakemon. It’s really nice to see MetalFantomon again, we last saw him in Savers, but he’s been on the Pendulum X.
Greymon evolves mid battle which, again is great because it’s something we have rarely get to see in Digimon. Meanwhile Birdramon has to fight two MetalFantomon. Gee Sora, how come the writers let you fight two bad guys?
During this time, Koshiro is still trying to see what’s going on with the ISS and is flying on Kabuterimon. Koshiro finds that the debris would crash into Tokyo, because of course it would.
MetalFantomon evolves to Gokumon – a Digimon that debuted in 2001 and was the boss in Rumble Arena! Side note, I love the evil chuckle that MetalFantomon has. Birdramon evolves to Garudamon and instantly wipes out two MetalFantomon with one hit because she’s definitely the strongest now, which is great.
However, Gokumon is super strong, so MetalGreymon has to evolve to WarGreymon and we’re already forgetting that Alteros mode exists except for the transformation in his evolution sequence. Side note, I love the combined battle cry Taichi and WarGreymon have.
Gokumon’s weird fire attack feels a little stiff but the rest of the battle between him and WarGreymon is pretty cool. WarGreymon wins pretty easily and then a bunch of Komondomon show up from the ground, who are the old friends of Lopmon.
Taichi asks Lopmon if there are other Holy Digimon other than Angemon. Lopmon says that they were a pair and Taichi does what OG Taichi never did..straight up asks if it’s Hikari and Lopmon nods because she’s in the Digital World so it must be so.
I love Komondomon and how they woof in reply to things. Taichi wants to rescue Hikari and find the Holy Digimon and Sora says they should find the others.
Meanwhile, we see that SkullKnightmon has Moon Milleniumon under his cape. Still hoping that SkullKnightmon is Tailmon, by the way.
This time we’re learning about WarGreymon in the Digimon Encyclopedia, and Agumon is helping out and says that the big boy pants are heavy but he’ll do his best. Next time we’ll learn about Komondomon.
Rating for Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 31
4.5/5
I really liked this episode, besides the fact that the subtitles on AnimeLab were huge, while nothing really huge happened, it was nice to have some plot, even if the characters still feel fairly wooden.
I probably rated the episode too highly, I just really, really liked the fact we got some semblance of plot and the fact that Taichi put two and two together and realised Hikari was relevant.
Another reason for my high rating is that it sets the path to a more hopeful one than the previous episodes had us on.
