Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 27 “To a New Continent”

Following on from last week’s review and, of course, our podcast discussion episode, it’s time to watch the 27th episode of Digimon Adventure: (2020)!

Opening thoughts

Finally, the Digi Team is complete. Hopefully we have all the characters stay relevant and I’m REALLY hoping that Hikari gets a character.

Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 27 Review

The children, Leomon, Spadamon, and the Peckmons are all on Eldoradimon. Taichi asks Hikari who called her, and she says she doesn’t know. Taichi notices that they’re approaching a continent with black lightning. Koshiro upgrades everyone’s Digivice and has unlocked the database so they can analyser Digimon in a DigiDex. Koshiro then fills Taichi in about the state of the Human World and how Zurumon is causing issues.

It’s weird how Koshiro fills in Taichi’s group, but nobody from Taichi’s group lets the others know what happened. Y’know…like with Devimon, Yamato’s brother appearing, Taichi getting vored…all that good plot stuff, Hikari meets Agumon and says he’s cute. Taichi notes that Hikari isn’t surprised by Digimon. Hikari then looks at Patamon with her cold dead eyes and Takeru introduces himself and Patamon.

Sora asks Yamato if Takeru is his brother and Yamato finally says that Patamon is the Holy Digimon. Taichi asks Hikari if she has a Digivice. She doesn’t. Koshiro finds out that there is a problem going on at NaSA, because of course there is, then the black cloud from the continent approaches, while Zurumon is eating data, and then the rocket explodes. So…RIP to a bunch of people I guess.

Sora wonders if the black lightning is synchronised with the disasters in the Human World. Koshiro wonders if it’s Zurumon and Yamato says it’s like Nidhogmon in the fake Tokyo. Taichi says they have to do something about it..which I feel like is said by him every episode. Leomon, Falcomon, and Spadamon protect the children from the black lightning with their fists. Leomon says that Eldoradimon’s wounds aren’t healed from the miasma and the children have to get to the continent.

Quick side note…how come Agumon and Taichi are healed from being vored and covered in miasma but Eldoradimon..the giant land turtle…is having a bad time?

Anyway, we get a bunch of fast paced evolutions from Biyomon, Tentomon, and Gomamon as the children are taken away. Pretty sure Leomon, Falcomon, Spadamon, and Eldoradimon just died, so he didn’t even make it ten episodes. They approach land, which..looks like it’s covered with Tortamon….and it is. Which is pretty cool.

Taichi jumps off Kabuterimon and gets Agumon to evolve. I have no idea why Taichi had to jump but it looks cool. Something I’m not a big fan of in this series is how every episode the Digimon can evolve even if they should be tired from the previous fight, this was always referenced in the original, but it barely referenced here.

Gabumon evolves without an animation and Togemon also evolves. Suddenly the Tortomon start screaming and Groundramon shows up from under the cliff and EATS DIGIMON. Which is horrifying and cruel but is really great to see Digimon actually being creatures which we haven’t really seen much. Because it’s shounen, Taichi has a flashback to the same thing we saw last episode and says that Digimon eat so they can have power to evolve.

Garurumon says they have to fight and Greymon tells him not to get gobbled up. Greymon, Garurumon, Kabuterimon, and Birdramon super evolve, which suddenly makes this feel really weird how we’re worried about an perfect level Digimon and now have four of the same level.

The moment where the four perfect level Digimon run past reminds me of the weird flashback lore part we had at the start of the series. Togemon and Ikkakumon also super evolve. WereGarurumon becomes Saggitarius mode, which, interesting to note, is the third time he’s done that and I don’t think we’ve seen Alteros mode again since his debut. Also…they can still just summon it at will…

I don’t think levels mean anything in this series because six perfect levels are struggling to fight one. Taichi remembers he can get his Digimon to Alteros mode. We get shots of each kid..frowning..instead of wondering “hey what happened to his arm this is new I sure do wish that Taichi filled us in with what we missed”.

We get the anime moment of “everyone give me your power’ as MetalGreymon shoots down Groundramon’s mouth and everyone attacks at once. Ah I love anime of “what if we actually just tried?” They blow Gounrdramon up and everyone reverts to their child forms…Koshiro says that it’ll be bad if all the Digimon here are on the same level. Then DarkKnightmon shows up. Who I’m pretty sure the majority of the cast have not met.

Ah okay Sora actually asks who that is. Thanks Sora. He blows wind at the children, which is apparently a giant threat because every evil Digimon in this series does that when they appear. Takeru stands in front of him, I bet he’s going to tell him to stop.

Takeru and Patamon say that they’ll fight with everyone too and Patamon evolves to Angemon and the episode ends to the new ending sequence which has all the characters hanging out with their partner Digimon in the Human World in what appears to be Winter or Autumn wear. Including the Digimon. Tailmon is here too. Huh, it has a nice little spotlight on Mimi more than everyone else.

The encyclopaedia introduces us to Patamon who can tolerate up to 80 decibels which is the noise of a train. But then wonders if they are even ears. Angemon is next!

Rating for Digimon Adventure 2020 Episode 27

4/5

Even though this episode was just an ‘okay’ fighting episode – it sure was nice to see everyone fighting as a team somewhat equally. I’m giving a surprisingly high rating of ‘4’ on the basis that I have given worse episodes 3.5s, however, maybe I just enjoyed seeing everyone fight together again.

Anyway, most of my complaints from this episode are more complaints about the series overall and are not unique to this episode.

The new ending animation is cute, but I think I preferred the last one.
