Following on from last week’s review and, of course, our podcast discussion episode, it’s time to watch the 13 episode of Digimon Adventure: (2020)!
Opening thoughts
So far this season we haven’t really seen much of Sora’s personality – or much of Sora’s anything for that matter. Hopefully the character we saw a glimpse of in episode 11 is something that we get to see more of this episode and it wasn’t just there so Yamato had some form of barrier in his own episode.

We get a look at Piyomon in the analyser – apparently her flying has improved thanks to Sora, and it’s Tentomon’s turn next time!
Birdramon and the other group are still flying, and Joe is still airsick. They’re flying over a large jungle. Gomamon is cheering Joe up. Sora tells Birdramon to land so that they can have a break. Suddenly Yamato sees FunBeemon flying away from Waspmon, they then see a Cannonbeemon overhead.
It’s really cool to see some Digimon that haven’t really appeared so much in the show before. Sora wonders if it’s a Digimon, which seems a silly thing to wonder. The Waspmon are flying the Funbeemon into the Cannonbeemon and Sora decides they should save them, again showing how caring she is to those who can’t protect themselves.
Poor Joe falls off Birdramon to his death, Gomamon jumps after him. cannonbeemon sends out more Waspmon to locate them. Yamato and Sora are unable to find Joe and Gomamon in the jungle, but they do find a very very cute FunBeemon and I LOVE HER SO MUCH. FUNBEEMON IS NOW MY FAVOURITE DIGIMON EVER.
Sora lets the FunBeemon know she won’t capture them and introduces herself. Sora then asks what is happening. The FunBeemon get turned into warriors. Gabumon points out that the Waspmon were emitting miasma. Suddenly, the group hear Joe yelling for help – he has been captured along with Gomamon and Funbeemon. Joe wants Gomamon to evolve, but then feels sick.
Sora wants to rescue them, but Yamato says he has an idea.
Meanwhile, Taichi, Koshiro, and Mimi are walking through a desert – and look! Koshiro is mentioning his laptop not working lately. Mimi tells Koshiro not to worry and he’ll get a new one from her Grandfather, and then taichi and Agumon suggest percussive maintenance.
Back to Sora and Yamato, we see the group playing heroes and rescuing groups of FunBeemon. Sora and Yamato stand in the way of their Digimon partners from an attack, which is really weird but nice to see. They get captured, which I guess was their plan.
Gomamon has been separated from Joe, who has been discarded as rubbish as he is not a Digimon. Yamato and Sora’s group arrive in the CanonnBeemon, and Gabumon evolves to Garurumon with an animation sequence. Garurumon defeats some Waspmon and presses on.
Garurumon evolves to WereGarurumon with an animation sequence and beats up some more Waspmon. They rescue Joe, and Gomamon frees himself with his Marching Fishes, and then asks for the others to help rescue the FunBeemon. The group then becomes surrounded by Waspmon, and WereGarurumon bursts through the ground.
Piyomon gets her longest evolution sequence yet, but is still just engulfed in flames. Sora is very strong and is able to carry both Gomamon AND JOE WITH ONE ARM.
Sora flies off to rescue the other FunBeemon, and Yamato said that he knew she couldn’t just leave them behind.
Joe and Ikkakumon are fighting off the Waspmon while the other two fly back to the CanonnBeemon to rescue the FunBeemon. Yamato and WereGarurumon enter the CannonBeemon to rescue the FunBeemon while Birdramon and Sora fly outside.
WereGarurumon holding two FunBeemon in his arms is most certainly the highlight of the episode, honestly. Birdramon flies back around and the CanonnBeemon charges a huge cannon at them which ends up blowing up a mountain. Birdramon’s attack basically does nothing on the CanonnBeemon, and Sora thinks of Joe and Yamato fighting and the FunBeemon that she wants to save.
She promises to save them all, which activates her crest and allows Birdramon to evolve to Garudamon and she is able to defeat the CannonBeemon and everybody thinks that Garudamon is very cool because she very much is.
Meanwhile, Koshiro’s laptop is connected again and mentions that the next canyon is where they are meeting up with Yamato’s group. Taichi asks what is happening at home and Koshiro’s laptop is slow again. Taichi, once again, once to beat up the laptop.

Finally Sora gets to shine – the caring character that we saw a glimspe of two episodes ago continues to want to save small Digimon. Piyomon finally got some evolution animations too!
I’m enjoying the fact that a character’s episode does not mean that we only see that character – we got to see Yamato play an important role in the episode, Joe existed, and we got an update on the other half of the group!
It’s also really great to see some more Digimon who haven’t really appeared in much of the anime before.
However, there was something about this episode that felt oddly like filler, but I can’t really put my finger on it.
While I do feel really sorry for Joe who acted as a damsel in distress the entire episode, but I’m just glad that Sora didn’t have to be.
I am also very relieved that Sora’s love didn’t come from any romance but just her love and care in general when it comes to saving others. It’s a nice representation of love which meant we didn’t have to think about ten year olds having romance.
